2025 Sue Britton Bursary Award recipient
A student at King’s College London GKT School of Medical Education, has been awarded the 2025 Sue Britton Bursary Award.
Sue Britton was a double-lung transplantee who passed away in 2020. She had worked in occupational health for many years.
The bursary award is made annually in Sue’s name, by Occupational Health Assessment Ltd, to a medical student who has shown exceptional courage in the face of difficult circumstances.
This year’s recipient, Ms. Nishka Patel, is a final year medical student at the London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Guy’s, King’s College and St Thomas’ Hospitals (known as “GKT”). Nishka was chosen as the recipient by Sue’s family.
Nishka is very nearly a fully qualified doctor, although has faced and overcome significant barriers to her success, including having to have brain surgery herself.
Despite facing difficulties, Nishka has established mentorship schemes for other students, is a student ambassador for CLEFT, a charity focused on providing sustainable ways to improve cleft care in the UK and overseas, is President of KCL Emergency Medicine Society and Vice President of KCL Plastics, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery Society for 2024/25.
Alongside these activities at medical school, Niska is also a carer, participates in hospital placements and also works part-time in the University coffee shop, to help fund her studies. She has also secured a placement at John Hopkins University in the USA.
Nishka said “The adversities I have faced have tested my resilience and determination to its limits, but Sue Britton’s legacy of positivity, humanity and courage resonates deeply with me, and I strive to uphold these values in my journey as a future healthcare professional. The adversities I have faced have not deterred me, but have instead fuelled my drive to succeed and make a meaningful impact on other people’s lives in the field of medicine”
Sue’s family added “We were all impressed with the way Niska coped with her own diagnosis, treatment and resulting difficulties, whilst maintaining excellent academic outcomes, as well as being involved in and initiating extracurricular activities, which show her commitment to healthcare goes beyond the day-to-day and she is the most outstanding applicant since the bursary began.”
Magnus Kauders, Managing Director, Occupational Health Assessment Ltd says “We are proud to be able to make an annual award in Sue’s name and Nishka is another incredibly worthy recipient. We all wish her well in her future career as a doctor.”
