Supporting female health in Sri Lanka
Occupational Health Assessment Ltd is proud to be contributing to funding an elective placement for a recent graduate of Imperial College London.
Fatema Mustansir Dawoodbhoy has just arrived in Sri Lanka to help promote effective menstrual health management, which can have a profound effect of individual and societal health.
Fatema has already contributed to research into treatments for heavy menstrual bleeding, which is a remarkable feat so early in a medical career.
Arka Health Initiative
In partnership with the Arka Health Initiative, Fatema will be supporting rural clinics in Sri Lanka in providing education and treatment for sexual and reproductive health amongst diverse populations.
A majority of women in Sri Lanka do not receive thorough female or sex education, resulting in STIs, unplanned pregnancies and
contraceptive stigma. This all leads to an education gap and contributes to an ongoing poverty cycle. Effective education can significantly improve health outcomes, lives, society and the economy.
Menstrual health management
Period health in Sri Lanka is often also poor, with schoolgirls and women often not using pads or tampons, owing to lack of access
and unaffordability. Having to rely on cloth instead ultimately leads to poor menstrual health management, in turn resulting in UTIs and work or educational disruption.
Because of this, Fatema will also be contributing to the Adithi Initiative, which aims to make sanitary pads more affordable and accessible, to help break the cycle of poor menstrual health and poverty.
With the chance to apply her medical knowledge in a real-life setting, Fatema will be able to help bring about real and lasting
change for many people. Having already secured a Foundation Year role with a rotation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the hope is that path continues for many years to come.
